From Preservation to Capability
The shift from storing knowledge to producing understanding
From preservation to capability is the shift from knowledge systems that store information to systems that actively support discovery, verification, and updating. The fictional Encyclopedia Galactica was a preservation device; Coscientist aims to be a capability device.
Preservation is necessary but not sufficient. An encyclopedia that stores facts perfectly but cannot surface contradictions, track definition drift, or update through rebuttal will eventually become stale or misleading. A knowledge ark survives a dark age only if future readers can re-derive conclusions, not just inherit them.
This is why Coscientist emphasizes the Dialectical Graph, exploration strategies, and the epistemic protocol layer. The system is designed to produce new understanding from stored material, not just return what was deposited.
